Spring firearms cleanup ends

A spring clean-up of firearms by Hamilton Police has come to an end, and it appears to have been a success.

The firearms amnesty program collected a total of 374 firearms and nearly 20,000 rounds of ammunition. That includes 262 shotguns and rifles and 112 handguns.

Hamilton Police picked up the firearms from 227 residences, and they say most of them weren’t properly stored or secured.

The program was originally intended to last for four weeks, but was extended to six. It began with the collection of an 1871 Snider-Enfield rifle. The last item to be turned over was an AK46 assault rifle.
