Environment Canada says Hamilton can expect around 20 to 30 millimetres of rain on Tuesday.

The special weather statement covers Burlington, Niagara, Haldimand-Norfolk and Brant as well.

It is also warning that up to 40 millimetres of rain is possible in areas that get hit by thunderstorms.

The weather authority says the rain will move in from the southwest Tuesday afternoon as a low pressure system approaches.

It says heavy downpours may cause ponding on poorly drained sections of highways and that drivers should allow extra time to reach their destination.
