Environment Canada says the Colorado low is making its way across the central US toward the Great Lakes, causing a special weather statement for several areas of Southern Ontario.

The special weather statement is in effect for most areas across Southern Ontario including Hamilton, Halton-Peel, Waterloo-Wellington Region, as well as Toronto.

Environment Canada warns of a mix of freezing rain, winds, and between five- and 25 centimetres of snow starting Thursday and continuing through Saturday.

Freezing rain is possible Thursday morning before transitioning into snow or rain in the afternoon.

Snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are likely. Some precipitation will be in the form of ice pellets and possibly rain as well, reducing predicted snowfall amounts.

Residents are warned of wind gusts of up to 80 km/h before the main storm that may cause utility outages.

The only areas not facing a special weather statement in the Golden Horseshoe are Niagara and Dunnville-Caledonia-Haldimand regions.

The Colorado low is a widespread low-pressure system from the US, bringing snow, wind and icy conditions.

Northern New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are still dealing with another winter storm system Wednesday morning, while most of Newfoundland is under rain and wind warnings.

The effects are being felt Wednesday in southeastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba as well with falling heavy snow.

Eastern Quebec could see a snowstorm begin on Friday.
