Special air quality statement in effect for Southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Southern Ontario due to possible high levels of air pollution.
The weather agency says smoke from active forest fires in northwestern Ontario has moved over the southern region.
“Elevated particulate matter levels and hazy conditions have been reported at several stations. Reduced visibilities and deteriorating air quality are possible if the smoke descends to ground level,” states the public alert.
People may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches, or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
Officials say those who may be exposed to wildfire smoke, should take extra precautions to reduce exposure. They say wildfire smoke is a constantly changing mixture of particles and gases which includes many chemicals that can be harmful.
Conditions are expected to improve later Tuesday when a cold front moves through the province.
