Somali-Canadian journalist killed in terrorist attack

Hodan Nalayeh and her husband were among those killed in the attack. At least four assailants descended on their hotel last night, beginning with a suicide car bombing at the front gate.
Gunmen stormed the building and the attack lasted 14 hours before Somali troops shot and killed all the militants. Those who were killed in the attack included a presidential candidate for August’s regional elections.
One other journalist and a UN agency staff member were also reported to have been killed. The Al-Shabab militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group remains a major security threat, with fighters frequently carrying out bombings in Somalia and neighboring Kenya.
