Snowpiercer is an English-language adaptation of the French graphic novel by Korean director Bong Joon-ho. On a future Earth ravaged by the effects of a new ice age, the remaining human population live in a large train which circles the globe continually. A strict class structure controls the train’s population, with the poor relegated to the tail section, while the elite live in luxury at the front. Eventually Curtis (Chris Evans) has had enough and leads a team of rebels through the train to gain control of the engine. The film co-stars Song Kangho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, and Ed Harris.

Bong is probably best known for his monster movie The Host, which broke records at the Korean box office and launched him into super-stardom, and while a movie about a futuristic train might not appeal to a lot of filmmakers, Bong’s interest was perked. “The first thing that grabbed my attention was the unique cinematic space of a train, and the vision of hundreds of metal pieces moving like a living snake carrying people squirming inside. And the people inside were fighting against each other after being divided into separate and distinct cars — they were not equal in this Noah’s Ark-like contraption that held the last survivors on Earth.”

Snowpiercer is rated 14A.
