The province has fined one of it’s main snow removal contractors $900,000 for failing to clear the QEW during two large snowfalls in the Hamilton region last year. The opposition members are saying that the governing Liberals are to blame for signing contracts with companies who were not up to the task.

The November 2014 snow storm saw dozens of collisions, something the transportation minister, Steven Del Duca was forced to admit. The followed a scathing report from the Auditor General last spring.

Back in 2009, contractors were chosen based on cost. Even when ministry staff warned that the contractors don’t have the necessary equipment to do the job. And on Tuesday the Transportation Minister revealed that it is something taxpayers are now on the hook for.

Del Duca says that they are focused on making sure that they are prepared for this winter.
