Small businesses await impact of tax break

There have been mixed responses to the holiday tax break. Shoppers who spoke with us today say it’s a little too late for the break, but they are excited about it and will likely take advantage of the opportunity to save money.

Rebecca Bamford, the business owner of Citizen Kids on Locke Street, says the GST/HST tax break has been a hassle. However, Bamford says she’s happy that people will be able to save during the holidays and a little beyond. She also notes that she hasn’t seen an increase in the number of shoppers coming in, but she remains optimistic.

Over at Electric Diner on James Street North, the manager says she hasn’t seen more customers either.

The tax break will last until February 15. Today, the Minister of Small Business said this tax break will help local businesses during and after the holiday rush.

The Liberals have also proposed sending a $250 check to anyone who worked in 2023 and made less than $150,000, but they have not yet introduced legislation for that plan.
