Skate Oakville is celebrating its 75th anniversary this weekend with three shows.

It’s one of the oldest and largest skating clubs in Canada. The club will be celebrating all the changes in skating, from decade to decade. Several Canadian and international skaters will be at an alumni reception on Saturday night. There will also be two shows on Saturday, and one on Sunday afternoon, with the money raised going to the new Oakville Trafalgar Hospital. Joni McPhail, the Skating Director at Skate Oakville said the sport has endured some major changes over the years.

“Skating in the past 75 years has changed so much, from what we do on the ice, the equipment, the abilities, the facilities. How it’s judged, how kids train, practice, practically everything. From what they wear we’ll be doing a little bit of all of that throughout.”

Skate Oakville says between 2,000 and 2,500 people join the club ever year, and almost a million skaters have passed through their doors since they opened. Hamilton Skating Club is also celebrating its 75th anniversary this weekend. It’s hosting a gala at the Dave Andreychuck Mountain Arena and skating centre on Saturday.
