SIU’s Scott takes issue with Mesic family

The head of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is taking issue with the family of a Hamilton man shot and killed by police in June.

The family of Steve Mesic claims there are discrepancies in the SIU’s report on the shooting. But Ian Scott says police were justified in shooting Mesic after he refused to drop a shovel he’d been holding like a baseball bat. The father of Mesic’s wife says there are several differences between the official report and a private briefing the families received from the lead investigator in the case. Norm Dorr says if there’s not a cover-up, then someone needs to explain the discrepancies. But Scott says it may simply be a matter of miscommunication about some of the facts.
