SIU won’t charge police in Kitely death

The Special Investigations Unit won’t be charging Hamilton Police in connection with the death of a 36 year old Hamilton man last February.

The SIU says the incident began when James Kiteley tried to steal a TV from a house on Brighton Avenue.

Police arrested Kiteley and the SIU says that’s when he went into medical distress.

He was taken to hospital and died the next day.

An autopsy shows he died of “restraint asphyxia”.

SIU director Ian Scott says on that basis, the officer was not the cause of Kiteley’s death.
