The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) found no reasonable grounds to believe two Halton Regional Police officers committed a criminal offence after a 24-year-old woman died and a 29-year-old man was injured after they fell from a balcony on Jul. 7.

The SIU was notified because the officers were outside the apartment when the man and woman fell.

According to the SIU, officers were called about an individual brandishing a handgun in an apartment on Ghent Avenue on Jul. 7.

The woman went to the balcony to flee while officers were knocking on the door. She fell while trying to scale the balcony. When officers forced open the apartment door the man tried to escape using the balcony.

The man fell while the woman was receiving medical care. The woman died and the man suffered a brain injury and other serious injuries.
