SIU launches investigation into fatal police shooting in St. Catharines

Ontario’s top police watchdog has launched an investigation into a fatal police shooting in St. Catharines Monday night.
Niagara police say they were called to a home on Melody Trail near Arthur street around 9 p.m. The police service has not disclosed the nature of the call at this time.
Upon arrival, police say an “interaction” took place between officers and an adult man, resulting in the man being shot by police.
Despite lifesaving measures being performed, the man was pronounced deceased.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked their mandate sparking an investigation into the police shooting.

Detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service are additionally investigating the incident.
Portions of Melody Trail and Arthur Street are closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The closures are expected to last several hours as police continue to investigate.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of law-enforcement officials in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
