SIU investigating the death of a man after an interaction with Niagara Parks police

Ontario’s police watchdog, the SIU has released new details, about its investigation into the shooting death of a man in Niagara Falls on Monday afternoon. A 49-year-old man died after he was shot by a Niagara Parks police officer around two o’clock on Monday afternoon, under the rainbow bridge.

The SIU says two officers responded to a nuisance call about the man who they say then fired bear spray at them and was carrying an edged weapon. One officer then fired a gun at the man and the man was pronounced dead on scene. Both officers went to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

The SIU is mandated to investigate when someone dies during an interaction with police, three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Wednesday.
