SIU investigating death of 59-year-old man in Brantford

Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating if an interaction with Brantford Police in May contributed to a 59-year-old man’s death.

Emergency crews responded to a home in Brantford in the area near Buffalo and West Streets on May 30 for a medical call.

Investigators say there was an interaction between officers and the man at the home.

The man died in hospital on July 2 during surgery prompting the Office of the Chief Coroner to investigate his death.

On July 9 Brantford police notified the Special Investigations Unit that the Office of the Chief Coroner had contacted them.

The SIU has invoked its mandate to investigate if the May interaction with the man and the police contributed to his death.

The SIU says a post-mortem was scheduled for Friday in Toronto.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to look into the case.
