SIU investigates the death of Fort Erie man

Ontario’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate the death of a man in Fort Erie.

According to a release from the Special Investigations Unit, Niagara police officers were called to help EMS with a “violent patient” on Wednesday afternoon.

The 61-year-old man was in ambulance and being transported to hospital from his home in the area of Lakeshore Rd. and Adelaide St. Officers helped to subdue the man and handcuffed him.

The man died in hospital late Thursday night.

The SIU has one investigator and two forensic investigators assigned to the case. One subject officer and one witness officer have been designated.

A post-mortem has been scheduled for Saturday morning.

The SIU investigates police involvement in incidents resulting in injury, death or sexual assault.
