Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating after a man was stabbed to death and police shot the suspect in downtown Hamilton on Sunday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Hamilton police responded just before 4 p.m. to an apartment building in the area of Hunter Street East and Spring Street for an assault call.

Hamilton police say they found a man on the porch of his home suffering from a stab wound to his upper body.

In an update Monday, Det. Sgt. John Obrovac identified the victim as 74-year-old Charles James Francis Jouvence. He was known as Jacques by his family and friends.

Police say Jouvence died of his injuries in hospital.

The SIU says officers entered an apartment unit, where they found a man armed with an edged weapon. Hamilton police had an interaction with the 30-year-old suspect, which led to at least one officer firing their gun.

The man was struck and taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, but Obrovac says he is known to Hamilton police.

The motive of the stabbing is unknown and no charges have been laid at this time.
