Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a police pursuit in Toronto that left a man with serious injuries.

Toronto police were called to the area of Bathurst St. and King St. for reports of a knife-point robbery around 6:10 p.m. Sunday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says officers located a man who was carrying a knife and deemed him a person of interest. The 28-year-old man fled on foot southbound on Bathurst St. and police gave chase.

The SIU says officers used their stun guns but the man continued to run away.

He was then struck by a police cruiser.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

An officer was also taken to hospital with unknown injuries.

The watchdog says an investigator, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
