Ontario’s police watchdog has identified the man killed in a police shooting in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Tuesday as Martin Gordyn of the Niagara Region.

The shooting followed a police chase from Niagara Falls, as officers responded to reports of an impaired driver.

The Special Investigations Unit says an individual reported seeing two people sleeping inside a vehicle at Lundy’s Lane and Corwin Ave.

When officers arrived the vehicle took off, prompting the chase.

Officers were able to stop the vehicle in the area of Line 3 and the Niagara River Parkway around 2:30 p.m.

There was an “interaction” with police and Gordyn, 27, was shot. He died in hospital.

The SIU is investigating the shooting. They say a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Thursday morning.

A Niagara police officer has been designated as a subject officer.

23 Niagara officers, three Niagara Parks police officers and five OPP officers have been designated as witness officers.

A woman who was inside the vehicle was arrested at the scene. Niagara police have identified her at Lindsey Archer, 29, of Dundas.

She’s been charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Obstruct Police
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance

Police also say two officers were injured at the scene. They were treated in hospital for minor injuries.
