SIU expands reach to appeal

Ontario’s highest court now says the province’s Special Investigations Unit can investigate incidents involving police who have resigned or retired.

A ruling Monday by the Ontario Court of Appeal also says the SIU can probe incidents which happened before its officially came to be in 1990.

The ruling stemmed from a complaint from a woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted by a retired Peel police officer.
