SIU continue investigating Rymal Road crash, two people injured, driver fled on foot

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to look into the events leading to a crash on the Mountain where police attempted to stop a vehicle and two people suffered minor injuries.

It happened at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the City’s East end. Hamilton police tried to stop a vehicle on Rymal Road East, the car fled and crashed into another driver on Terryberry Road. That car slammed into the the stop light knocking it down.

“We’re trying to determine exactly what transpired in the events leading up to that collision including why that vehicle was involved with Hamilton police officers, said SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro. “The driver of the vehicle fleeing police fled on foot, a passenger, 19-year-old was transported to hospital with minor injuries.”

The driver of the vehicle that was hit, a 44-year-old Hamilton woman was taken to hospital with broken bones.

“Those are serious injuries under the SIU’s mandate,” Gennaro said.

The 44-year-woman had her 10-year-old son in the vehicle, he was not hurt.

As part of their investigation, SIU officers will look into the road conditions at the time of the crash, what the drivers were doing as well as what police officers involved in the case were doing and speed.

According to a press release four investigators and two forensic investigators are assigned to look into the incident.
