SIU investigate Friday after police shooting at Oakville hotel

It was a frightening wake up for guests at an Oakville hotel early this morning, where police shot and killed a 41 year-old man.
Because of the police involvement the province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate.
CHCH News spoke to guests at the Monte Carlo Inn on South Service in Oakville like Sanj Gautam.
“I heard shots at five thirty or what or something at five thirty. I didn’t know they were shots. Went back to sleep, woke up to this.”
There was still a heavy police presence at the hotel Friday.
After the shooting the man was taken to Hamilton General Hospital where he later died.
Another guest, Chris Mitchell was surprised to see a shooting in the area.
“Is it startling to know there was a shooting here? Ya, Oakville, it’s a nice area.”
The SIU had forensic investigators combing the area for much of the day.
They did not identify the man, nor would they release details as to why Halton Police entered the hotel at that time.
They did confirm that the man was not holding a gun or knife, but implied that he was holding an object that was a threat to police.
Although they won’t say where exactly the shooting took place, guests say the entire lobby has been cordoned off as well as the entrance to the hotel’s restaurant.
Officers would not let anyone into the side entrance, and many guests said that they were hastily told to pack their things and leave the hotel.
Most were happy to oblige.
