The province’s police watchdog has charged a Toronto officer with aggravated assault in connection with an incident that happened earlier this year.

According to a release from the SIU, a 48-year-old man was seriously injured while in custody in January.

“As a result of the SIU investigation, Cst Christopher Merritt is charged with one count of aggravated assault, under the Criminal Code, contrary to section 268,” the statement read.

Merritt is expected to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in September.

“As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation,” SIU officials said.
