SIU called to investigate death of 93 year old man

The SIU has been called to investigate the death of a 93-year-old man after his body was pulled from the Welland Canal.

Just before 8pm on March 31, the Niagara Regional Police received a 911 call about a man at the Welland Canal. Officers responded and engaged with the man.

Sometime before noon on April 1, the body of a 93-year-old man was found in the water at the Welland Canal, near the Merritt Park Amphitheatre.

The SIU is normally called when police are involved where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. The SIU is currently waiting for post-mortem and toxicology before releasing the cause of death.

Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
