Sir John A. Macdonald procession disrupted in Hamilton

A procession to mark the 200th birthday of Canada’s first prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald was called off on Sunday.
Native protestors gathered in front of the Sir John A. Macdonald statue at Gore Park.
Demonstrators chanted and held signs bearing the words ‘native lives matter.’
For many first nations the legacy of Macdonald is a painful one.
Macdonald has been long hailed as one of Canada’s founding fathers.
He also played a lead role in the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway that connected the western part of Canada to the east.
For 50 years the Sir. John A. Macdonald society has been celebrating his birthday with a wreath laying ceremony and procession.
With the procession cancelled the birthday celebrations moved inside Slainte Irish Pub.
