The 87th Annual Academy Awards are being handed out this weekend, and you can bet students at Oakville’s Sheridan College will be paying close attention to one of the categories.

Three of the five films nominated for best animated feature were directed by Sheridan grads.

“It’s actually really inspirational to hear that you can come from Sheridan and end up at the red carpet at the oscars” says student Kaitlin Sutherland.

There are now a total of 10 oscar nominations to come out of Sheridan’s animation program and 4 wins – two for animated short and the others for scientific and technical achievement.

“We have some great professionals coming in teaching part time. That’s part of our secret i think. People from the industry coming back to teach” says Animation Professor Tony Tarantini. “In this program you begin to be a director and if you chose to take that route, slowly you have the belief that you can be a director. You don’t have to be someone in one phase of production.”

Up to 12-hundred hopefuls from all over the world apply to the program annually. Only about 150 students are admitted to first year.
