Shatner hosts Juno Awards
Star Trek icon William Shatner is set to host the 41st Juno Awards tonight in Ottawa, where some local artists have already won.
Hamilton rock group The Arkells took home the prize for group of the year at last night’s Juno Awards gala, beating out such big acts as Nickelback, Sam Roberts Band, Down with Webster and Hedley. The win came as a surprise to most as Nickelback is one of the biggest bands of the last decade – though very divisive.
Also last night, Hamilton pianist and composer David Braid won for best traditional jazz album for his solo CD, Verge. The Juno win is the second for Braid, who’s been nominated six times before.
There are seven awards still up for grabs at tonight’s show, including artist of the year, songwriter, best dance album. The awards begin at 8 p.m. And will feature performances by Nickelback, Blue Rodeo, Deadmau5 and Feist. Teen heartthrob Justin Bieber will also be in attendance to see both of his nominations contested.
