From the malls to the streets. Ottawa Street in Hamilton specifically where vendors are trying to lure customers to shop local. Melissa Raftis has the details.

From 4 until 8 tonight, the event called Sew This is Christmas is taking place on Ottawa Street North. This event has Santa on itès side. It’s a festive take on Sew Hungry with food trucks, live music from the Hamilton Blues Society which is holding a toy drive. .

There are christmas trees for sale here, there are caroles being sung by students from Delta Secondary. And many of the shops just happen to be offering discounts on this Black Friday.

Elisha Proiaetti, Ottawa Street BIA:  “I think customers typically think of shopping and sales on Black Friday and we just wanted to show that we can support local just as much as the big box on a Black Friday.   So, yeah it’s a great day for retail and shopping and our stores wanted to participate too.”

“I actually like it more because that way your money isn’t going to a big company. It’s going to people who you may even know. It’s much better, more friendly.”

“I think it’s excellent. It’s better to support the people around you than other countries or other communities. Might as well support whatès in your back yard.”

Sew This is Christmas runs until 8pm. Santa is greeting kids. No pushing and shoving just a lot of holiday cheer.
