Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Hamilton, Halton

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Hamilton and Halton Region, with storms having the potential to bring strong winds and damaging hail to the areas.

Environment Canada says a line of thunderstorms is expected to strengthen as it tracks southeast on Thursday.

Toonie sized hail as well as wind gusts reaching 90 km/hr are possible, and the government agency is encouraging residents to stay indoors if a thunderstorm strikes.

Anyone participating in water-related activities is also warned, as conditions may be unfavourable due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

Environment Canada said large hail can cause extensive property damage, breaking windows and denting vehicles, but it can also cause serious injury.
