Sentencing for Hamilton hacker in Yahoo breach delayed

Sentencing for the Hamilton man charged in the Yahoo data breach has been delayed until next month.

Karim Baratov, 23, pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the Yahoo email hack in 2014.

Prosecutors say Baratov was hired by a Russian intelligence agent to breach dozens of email accounts obtained in the Yahoo data hack.

They are seeking a sentence of seven years and 10 months.

On Tuesday, a San Francisco judge questioned if that sentence is longer than what other hackers have received for similar crimes – noting that Baratov was not behind the original hack.

Baratov’s attorneys have called for a sentence of three years and nine months.

The judge rescheduled sentencing for May 29.
