Niagara police say a bomb disposal unit was called in to destroy an artillery shell from the Second World War.

Niagara police say a retired officer discovered the shell on Tuesday, while using a bathyscope, an underwater viewing device, in the shallows of Lake Ontario near Lakeshore Rd. and Old Lakeshore Rd.

The shell was brought to the beach in Niagara-on-the -Lake and explosives were used to destroy. This was done as a precaution as it had significantly deteriorated.

Police say the area west of the Niagara-on-the-Lake range was used for training during the Second World War.
