The search for a swimmer who went missing while training for a triathlon has turned up nothing again today. Sean Leathong has an update from Lake Niapenko at the Binbrook Conservation area with more.

It’s been since Monday night since anyone has seen the 45 year old man who entered the water not far from the conservation area. Police are no longer calling this a search and rescue but rather a recovery mission, but it takes time to properly search the water.
Police continue to search on water and along the shoreline for any sign of a missing man.

The search is centred on an area that is near the boat launch, where the 45 year old man, whom police have not yet identified, along with three others entered the water on monday night to train for a triathlon around 7pm. The other three made it back to shore safely. The search began that same night and was called off at around 2:30am due to weather. Yesterday, Hamilton police were helped by divers from Peel Region, but nothing was found.

The search is being hampered by a number of factors. There are a lot of weeds in the water and the water is very cloudy. Also, Lake Niapanko is over 430 acres, but there aren’t any currents, so that means anything that’s below the surface isn’t moving, so the police are forced to move very slowly as they check the water.

The divers from Peel said that the cloudy water and long weeds made visibility only 1 foot in front off their face. Because there is no movement under the water, police are moving in a grid pattern across the water, but it is taking longer because of the reduced visibility.
