The Ontario government is reviewing the future of publicly funded schools for children with severe learning disabilities.
The application process for new students has been put on hold and parents fear the government will close the schools to save money.
171 students currently attend the four demonstration schools and one school for the deaf in London.
The education ministry has put a stop to new applications to attend these schools.
If these schools close, 151 staff will loose their jobs.
In 2012, the Drummond Report on reforming Ontario’s public services and cutting costs recommended closing the demonstration schools, and using the savings to fund programs for learning-disabled kids within the main school system.
The government is asking for input on the schools until April 8.
It is also worth noting that the the Drury and Whitney schools for the deaf in Milton and Belleville, and the W. Ross MacDonald school for the blind and deaf in Brantford are not under review.
