Tracey Cole’s daughter, Katie had just placed her foot on the first step of the bus when the tanker truck collided. In a split second Tracey grabbed Katie and her son, Edward and pulled them away just before impact. Katie says her mom is her hero. Overwhelmed by her daughter’s kind words, Tracey says she is happy that they’re okay.
A total of 7 kids between 5 and 12 years old were on the bus heading west on Steeles Avenue near Sixth Line. They were making their way towards Pineview and Stewarton public schools when the trip came to a traumatic halt. According to witnesses the truck driver never slowed down when the school bus came to a stop today, instead the truck slammed right into the bus sending it forward into oncoming traffic.
Kevin Marriott lives next door and rushed outside to find kids crying and screaming at the side of the road. Two kids at the back of the bus were the most seriously hurt, they were transported to McMaster Children’s Hospital and are being assessed for concussions.
The truck driver remained at the scene and police say he’s cooperating with their investigation. At this point no charges have been laid. Police continue to examine the truck’s operating system to determine when the driver hit the brakes.
