Sam Oosterhoff’s coffee event taken over by protestors upset with his stance on abortion

Around 100 people converged on the legion in Grimsby Saturday over MPP Sam Oosterhoff’s stance against abortion. Inside Oosterhoff was hosting a community coffee event with constituents.

Many of the people at the legion were pro choice and were confronting Oosterhoff about his belief.

Oosterhoff spoke at an anti-abortion protest at Queens park last week and said “We pledge to fight to make abortion unthinkable in our lifetime”. The Ford government says it welcomes a variety of beliefs within the PC party, but it will not reopen the abortion debate.

More than an hour before the coffee event was scheduled to end Oosterhoff left the building and was quickly surrounded by protesters. He refused to answer any of their questions, but a man who identified himself as Gary seen standing beside Oosterhoff inside, said he was here to help Sam, “The member was here to have a civil conversation with the constituents, unfortunately as a result that couldn’t happen”.

A small group of Oosterhoff supporters attended the event but no one wanted to speak.

The legion says it called police to move protestors out of the way not Oosterhoff. Earlier this month Oosterhoff’s staff called police on a group of seniors reading books at his office in protest of library cuts.

Protest organizers say this isn’t the end.

A request for comment sent to Sam Oosterhoff’s office has gone unanswered.
