Today is Toque Tuesday, a national awareness day for youth and adult homelessness in Canada.

Students and staff at Saltfleet Secondary School in Stoney Creek partnered today with Wesley Urban Ministries to sell toques and socks for $10 as part of a school fundraising campaign. The awareness and fundraising are part of the Raising the Roof, Canada’s national charity aimed at finding long-term solutions to homelessness.

Wesley’s Denise Scott: “Toques are not only a way of staying warm, but it’s also a way of bringing in the educational component to Toque Tuesday and to Raising the Roof and so we educate the community with bookmarks so that they know the facts on youth homelessness and adult and family homelessness.”

Saltfleet student Liam Trevusani: “Always be aware that there’s more going on outside of our lives. There are people who are struggling and who are less fortunate than us, and it’s important that we help those people and do everything we can, even though we each have a lot on our plates every day, that we do everything we can to help out and do what we can as individuals.”

Money raised today at Saltfleet will support Wesley youth housing and Wesley day centre. Both local programs help homeless youth and adults.
