Saint Laurent is a French historical biopic directed by Bertrand Bonello. The film premiered at Cannes last year and was France’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards. The film stars Gaspard Ulliel, Jérémie Renier, Louis Garrel, Léa Seydoux, Amira Casar, Aymeline Valade, and Helmut Berger.

1967–1976. As one of history’s greatest fashion designers entered a decade of freedom, neither came out of it in one piece.

Ulliel was already circling the role of Saint Laurent before the film was in Bonello’s hands. “It so happens that Gus Van Sant planned to make a film about him at one point. Gus and I had got on well on the set of his segment of Paris, je t’aime. One evening, he was dining out with Hedi Slimane when he saw a photo of Saint Laurent on the restaurant wall, and was struck by my resemblance to him. For me, Saint Laurent started there. I was very enthusiastic about the project, but it was shelved, which made me even happier to make the film with Bertrand.” On his director Ulliel adds that “Bertrand gave me complete freedom, just as he let a number of scenes veer off in unexpected directions when we were shooting. It was marvelous working with him.”
