The Supreme Court’s ruling on assisted dying is now in effect

As of today doctors in Canada are legally able to assist someone to die. The Supreme Court ruling is in effect and since the Federal government wasn’t able to get a new law in place many people are moving cautiously. There are very few guidelines for physicians to follow and it’s created a grey area that politicians and health care providers hope will soon become more black and white.
Until the Federal government can enact bill C-14, the Superior court says people suffering from grievous and irremediable illness qualify for the procedure. Two words that many doctors find too vague. In the meantime, each province has formed their own guidelines for assisted dying, guidelines that leave healthcare providers feeling vulnerable.
It’s not just physicans who are in this grey period before bill C-14 is made official, other healthcare workers, like at this hospice care facility are still awaiting the details to see how this will affect their operations, in the meantime they’re staying the course.
The bill is before the senate and it might not become law for weeks.
