Today Toronto’s first truly accessible baseball diamond opened.

The Roy Halladay Field’s surface is more like a court, and there are no raised bases, making it easier for kids with mobility issues to play the game.

During Halladay’s 16 years as a pro-player and 12 years as a Blue Jay, fans knew Roy as the 2-time Cy-Young winner and 8-time All-Star.

Halladay died after his plane crashed off the coast of Florida in 2017.

His widow Brandy and their two sons Braden and Ryan were all on hand for the reveal. “He would be so honoured. He would be humbled, he’d be embarrassed. He didn’t like the attention, but he would have been really excited,” Brandy said.

The director of Jays Care, the organization behind the diamond says they hope to build another in the city soon.
