The Rover is an Australian drama directed by David Michôd (Animal Kingdom). In a not too distant future, the economic collapse of the western world has left Australia in ruin, turning it into a lawless wasteland. Eric (Guy Pearce) lives a solitary life in the outback, but his world is turned upside-down when a group of failed thieves steal his car, his only remaining possession. One of the thieves, Rey (Robert Pattinson) is injured and left behind by his brother. With nothing left to lose, Eric brings Rey on a journey across the outback to find his brother and reclaim what’s his. The film co-stars Scoot McNairy and Gillian Jones.

Both native Aussies, Michôd and Pearce worked together on Animal Kingdom, and when it came time to cast the film, Michôd didn’t have to look far to find his titular rover. “I wanted the character to be a guy who had seen that world collapse, remembered a time when things were different and was carrying around a jaded resentment that was bubbling in a really murderous and dangerous way… When I started thinking about that I really started thinking about Guy. “I effectively wrote the character for Guy.”

The Rover is rated 14A.
