Road challenges remain on area highways

Road conditions were slowly improving late Thursday morning after a very challenging commute Wednesday evening and overnight for drivers.
OPP say there were 90 crashes in all along highways in the Hamilton area and 400 across the GTA.
This morning drivers and truck drivers were still describing some roads as “a sheet of ice.”
One truck driver, Tom Stogios spoke about the challenges.
“There were salters all through the night but again, when the sun rises, the minute that it hits the horizon, the temperature instantly drops about 2 degrees and what that does, after the salt has been laid out whatever snow was melted turns into instant ice and getting shaded by the barrier, obviously the sun’s not hitting it directly. And with a little bit of a windchill factor involved it just froze like an ice rink.”
As of mid Thursday slippery conditions were still being reported on the QEW east of the Ford Plant. Drivers are asked to use extra caution.
