Retired Niagara officer charged

A retired Niagara regional police officer is facing a slew of charges after he allegedly impersonated a police officer. Edward Pittman worked 36 years as a police officer. He’s covered cases from child abuse to sexual assault. Now he’s at the centre of a criminal investigation.

On September 24, police were called to Moyer road and Carl road in Welland regarding a driving complaint. Pittman had called police to complain about a woman’s driving, she also called police to complain about him. According to court documents, Pittman allegedly used his badge to identify himself as a police officer during the encounter. Police officers must return all uniforms and badges when they retire but are given a retirement badge for their service. Pittman retired from the force in 2012, investigators have not revealed what type of badge he showed.

If found guilty of impersonating an officer, Pittman could face up to 5 years in jail. Documents also allege Pittman was driving dangerously on Schisler road. He is also facing one count of harrassment. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on December 30th.

Investigators are not revealing why it took two months for the charges to be laid.
