Reports of bribes at Egypt airport

Shocking security procedures are being reported at the airport in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt — the departure point for the Russia-bound Metrojet Flight 9268 that crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last weekend, killing all 224 people aboard.

Security officials at the airport say bribes are taken by poorly-paid police officers who monitor machines that X-ray passengers’ bags.

And the officials say a key machine that scans baggage often does not work.

Britain and the U.S. say the Russian jetliner was likely brought down by a bomb that was smuggled aboard at the Sharm el-Sheikh airport.

About 11,000 Russians were flown home Saturday from Egypt, and an even larger number are expected to make the trip Sunday.

For security reasons, Russians flying out of Egypt are only allowed to take carry-on bags.

Moscow says two cargo planes will be sent to Egypt to bring back luggage the Russians had to leave behind.
