Repairs underway on closed Burlington Skyway bridge

Three days after a dump truck trailer crashed into the Burlington Skyway bridge, the popular commuter route remains closed and repairs are underway.

Structural engineers and their crew members spent most of the day dislodging vehicles that became trapped under the bridge when a dump trailer crashed into it Thursday, and now they are working to repair the damage.

The first step in a long clean up was backing the dump truck responsible for an unprecedented QEW closure down the Burlington Skyway bridge in pieces.

Kevin Richardson, a tow truck operator was part of the removal operation.

“It is very dangerous, yes. With all of the steel. So many loose pieces, so much is ripped off the actual structure.”

The QEW is a major transportation corridor and businesses are already taking a financial hit due to the closure of the highway.

On Friday most major arteries in Hamilton were jammed and truckers weren’t even bothering with the most direct, Eastport Drive re-route. The average extra travel time was three hours.

One employee from Packers Logistics figures his business is losing between $4,500 and $6,000 a day.

Traffic on Saturday was much lighter with Burlington St. remaining fairly clear and Eastport Drive moving smoothly.

Meanwhile Police continue to gather evidence about how the crash happened.

The Ministry of Transportation is expected to give an update on the closure on Monday.
