Remembering Tyler Norrie

A University of Waterloo hockey player died suddenly at a gym in his hometown Tuesday night. Tonight, Tyler Norrie’s family is preparing to bury him. But they’re also remembering him as a fun loving — determined guy who always had a big smile on his face.
22-year old Tyler Norrie was working out here at the Norfolk Fitness Centre at the Travelodge when he collapsed. Paramedics arrived on the scene around 5 pm and found no vital signs. He could not be resuscitated.
Tyler Norrie started playing hockey when he was just five years old. His dad, Duncan driving him to countless games and practices over the years. To say they were close would be an understatement.
Tyler quickly moved up the hockey ranks over the years — playing junior B for the Brantford Golden Eagles and then the Caledonia Corvairs. This past year he played for the University of Waterloo Warriors. Duncan says Tyler worked hard to accomplish his goals.
Tyler fiercely loved his family. His sister Lynsey always looked up to her big brother.
But his life wasn’t always about hockey. Tyler was in his second year of university studying environmental geography.
Duncan says his son had many interest and just a few weeks ago he decided he wanted to play the guitar.
One of the first songs he learned was Luke Bryan’s ‘Drink a Beer’.
That song will play at his visitation Friday at the Jason Smith Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be held Saturday morning.
They still don’t know what Tyler died from. Duncan says the autopsy shows no sign of any abnormalities in his heart or his brain. So the family still don’t have any answers as to why this happened.
