Homicide detectives are now investigating after the remains of a woman who was reported missing in Hamilton two years ago were discovered just east of Hanover, Ont.

In a video posted on Twitter early Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Det. Inspt. Scott Moore revealed a man and his son were walking in a wooded area near Highway 6 and Southgate Rd. 10 in Southgate Township on Dec. 24, 2019 when they came across what they believed were human remains.

The pair contacted police immediately and the OPP Criminal Investigations Branch launched an investigation.

Officers conducted an extensive search of the area for evidence and following a “lengthy forensic examination” of the remains, it was determined they belonged to Monica Chisar.

Chisar was last seen by a friend on July 11, 2018, in the area of Barton St. East and Parkdale Ave. North in Hamilton. Her family reported her missing to police on September 28, 2018.

Around the time of her disappearance, police said Chisar had gone missing in the past but always maintained contact with her family through social media. She had not reached out online recently which caused her family and police to be concerned for her well-being.

Investigators said Chisar didn’t have much history in Hamilton but had a “wide circle of associates” across the Greater Toronto Area.

Amanda Chisar, Monica’s sister, spoke with CHCH News in March 2019 and said the 29-year-old was trying to turn over a new leaf. She had a son in Mexico who she was trying to reconnect with.

A few months later, Hamilton police issued another plea for information on her disappearance after it was determined that foul play may have been involved.

OPP is asking anyone with information that could help with the investigation into her murder to contact the dedicated tip line at 1-855-677-4636.
