With Jonathan Bernier struggling, still winless this season, James Reimer has emerged as the de facto starting goalie for the Leafs. He hasn’t been given the job, he took it.
Reimer took a personal 4 game win streak into Friday night’s game in Carolina. Reimer with a 6-2-3 record on the season going into this one.
No scoring for 2-plus periods, the Leafs were getting outshot by a 2 to 1 margin, but Reimer was holding the fort until 7:47 of the 3rd when Brad Malone somehow gets this shot past Reimer, off his pad and in – a Bernier-like goal – but the only blemish on Reimer’s resume during regulation.
The Leafs would tie it on a goal by Nazem Kadri on a power play with 3:33 to go, Kadri’s 2nd of the season.
On to overtime then on to a shootout, and Reimer makes a sensational stop, stretching across to rob Elias Lindholm.
Reimer did get beaten once in the shootout but Peter Holland and Joffrey Lupul would score for the Leafs, they win it 2-1.
Reimer is 5-0 in his last five, 1.35 goals against average and a .960 save percentage.
Will he get the start in Boston? He should.
