It has now been one year since Fred Eisenberger was elected and returned to Mayor of Hamilton, replacing Bob Bratina. Eisenberger captured almost 40% of the vote on a campaign that promised economic development with sustainability.

There is a noticeably different tone at Hamilton City Hall these days. Unlike the previous term, council is less fractious, calmer and more co-operative. Mayor Eisenberger says “there hasn’t been a great deal of acrimony or controversy and we’ve had some significant successes”. One of those successes was the transfer of ownership of land on the waterfront. Another a commitment by the province to build a billion dollar light rail transit line in downtown Hamilton.

Eisenberger says another priority is addressing the city’s growing infrastructure needs. He plans to lobby the federal government to take advantage of their election promise to invest in infrastructure.

As for what he is focussing on in the months ahead? The tackle against poverty.
