Reaction to Hamilton’s LRT

Now that the city has certainty when it comes to transit funding from the province, what do residents think about the plan?
Nik Bulajic says he put his heart and soul and his life savings into his new store on King Street in Hamilton. He’s been open about 3 months and is worried about the impact construction of the new LRT will have on his business. “If the transformation could happen in the blink of an eye I’d be happy about it that would be great, but as a small business owner I am a little nervous that the years of construction are going to eat away at everything that we’ve poured into this place.”
Maja Kogut moved her jewellery business to King Street a few years ago, she thinks the LRT will ultimately be a good thing for downtown. “If its organized and done well without delays with minimal impact, negative impact on the businesses I think it would be a wonderful thing.”
Mayor Fred Eisenburger says this project is just like any other road construction it has to be done. He says its short term pain for long term gain and the city will do everything possible to minimize disruption on buninesses.
Ready or not shovels are expected to be in the ground for the $1 billon project in 2019.
