Ravine rescuers honoured by comrades

Burlington firefighters recognized some of their bravest members Friday afternoon.

A team of six firefighters that saved a local man who was stuck in a culvert after a nasty summer storm 3 years ago were given bravery awards by the local association. Only three of them could make the event.

The rescue happened in August 2008… a man was clearing debris from the culvert when his foot became stuck in the gate. The team went into the rushing water, and had to free him quickly as the water was rising fast.

The province honoured the six with bravery awards in February… but on this day it was time for their fellow firefighters to honour them.

Two other firefighters who saved two other lives were also honoured for their rescues at the ceremony. Only about 150 provincial bravery medals have been handed out in Ontario.
